Battles on the Border for Cyclists
Generally when you think of a battle of the states you think of the Rugby League ‘State of Origin’, however on the 1st weekend in May it is the cyclists that will be fighting for that winning position at the Mantra Battle on the Border Cycling Festival Tweed Coast.
The battle as it is commonly known brings together cyclist of all ages and abilities to contest one of the three events under its arm: the Tour De Tweed 4-Stage competitive tour, which caters for all those who like the challenge from Elite, Masters and Juniors; the Australian Under 19 Junior Road Championships, bringing the best of the juniors all trying for a spot in the Australian team to contest at the World’s in Italy; and the Gran Fondo Social Ride, a ride for anyone with a bike and enjoys a pedal.
A last minute surge in nominations could possibly see entries for the Tour de Tweed close a week early with only 30 spots left. Organiser Mike Crawley stated “we were pleased with the last minute interest in the Tour, it makes the competition a little more attractive”.
The Gran Fondo social ride allows the participant to choose the distance to suit them with a 100km, 136km and 189km ride there is something to suit any cycling enthusiast. The social ride is timed but is not a race. “They are very popular over in Europe, so we wanted to bring it to the Tweed” Crawley said.
So to all those thinking about being a part of the cycling fun, stop and join in already. It is an enjoyable safe way to ride around the Tweed Coast through the majestic landscape and relax and socialize at Mantra Battle village of Salt at night.

We can all be exceptionally proud of our club as the race day at Mt Cotton today was another resounding success. Competitors, Officials, Spectators, Sponsors and Volunteer members were unanimous in their verdict that the day was fantastic.
A special thank you to all the members and family and friends that volunteered their time today. Your contribution ensured the smooth running of what must rank as the best run amateur cycling event in Queensland.
Well done to Race Director, Neil Trembath, Assistant Race Director, Paul Hattink and the WRCC team that made this all happen. Great job well done.
The results of all the races should be up on the website tonight, and photos of the day will appear on the site during the week, thanks to Niels Juel.
The highlight of the day for the club’s racers was the win in Masters C for Dean Phillips, followed in third place by David Green. Other notable results for the club today were Laura Cahill’s 2nd place in U 17 girls and Andrew Francis winning the Prime in Masters B.
On a more painful note, Colin Marchant and Paolo Lencioni opted for a close inspection of the track surface. Both were very impressed with the surface quality but their bodies disagree. Despite a visit to hospital for Colin, he has nothing broken. So thankfully both are OK. Recover quickly Col.
Kind regards
Rob Cain
