We arrived at the docks under the Story Bridge, and rendezvoused with our fellow agents.
Immediately questions arose. Was there going to be a mole in our team? Who was Agent Frank? Where was the terminator? We were approached by a drunk woman, carrying a bottle in a brown paper bag. She asked for some money and agent Tracey agreed to give her some and asked Agent Pierre to provide the cash. Agent Pierre was immediately $5 poorer and the mission hadn't even started. The drunk woman then beckoned us to go into one of the boat sheds to start our mission - Half the recruits were reluctant - was this a trap? There was no clue as to whether she was a reliable contact.
The boat shed was dark and clammy. Graffiti lined the walls and the floorboards creaked underfoot. In the centre were some chairs. This was our briefing room! We were all thankful that we had not succumbed to a mugging in the first few minutes of the game.
Once seated, we waited..........
Out of the dust and damp on a ledge about 10 foot overhead appeared a stout, authorative figure. The combination of sunbeams and dust creating a silhouette of a muscular, broad shouldered, somewhat godly individual dressed in full military camouflage - his facial features were as yet inapparent, however in the dim light a well trimmed moustache could be made out. No introductions were necessary, we all knew that this was 'The Chief'.
His large muscular forearms flexed as he grabbed a rope that was dangling from the wooded rafters, and he slid down the rope with the ease of a large cat and landed neatly on the ground. I looked around and noticed that half of the female agents had developed slack lower jaws. This, I thought to myself must be one tough guy! I could think of only one who may be tougher, a legendary counter-intelligence agent known only as 'The Red'.
And thus started our mission in the pilot of 'The Brisbane Great Race', organised by River City Cruises (Big Darren and wife Caroline's business). It goes without saying that all 26 of us who attended had one of the most fun days ever. Split into 2 teams and assigned to complete various tasks around the shores of the Brisbane river, we were able to have a great day out in the sunshine, see a whole lot of the historic Brisbsane sights, improve out general knowledge of the city and have a great boat trip out to the river mouth in one of the coolest, fastest boats I have been in. Not to mention, the select few (namely Agent R) who managed to get a handful of tight manly rump - yes, indeed, Agent R misidentified one of our 'contacts'. We were ment to give the password 'you look sexy in those tight shorts' to a male contact disguised as a rock climber. Agent R felt so confident about having identified the correct person that she added a nice firm butt squeeze to punctuate her 'secret' password .......... needless to say that the correct person was watching from 100 yards away.
A big thanks to Darren and Caroline for organising this day. In the future they will hopefully be able to offer this as a team building exercise to corporates, and I am sure it will be a huge success based on the experience we had.
