Folks,

A huge year of racing awaits.

For those of you who are regular competitors – enjoy but please keep in touch so we can maximise our attendance at the major events. Also please keep in mind the new initiative for the “WRCC Road Series” and our ongoing goal for bigger and better representation at the major Open’s, State Road Titles and the TTT.

For those getting started or wanting to get started a few suggestions for racing:

1)      26th of January –the Tyalgum Cup. This is the first Road Race of the year held at Murwillumbah on Australia Day. It is a great first race of the year being quite short (about 36km) and nothing too big in the hill department.  Don’t bring the best wheels though – these are country roads. Also a friendly Club atmosphere so a good one to get your first race in without the pressure of a big Open event. Also a nice destination to take the family and explore the local area – beaches, forests, river etc. A few Club members also have local accommodation for pre race preparations and a cool down and shower after.

2)      31st of January to 7th of March - Sizzling Summer Series. A 4 race series of Crits with big fields on a fast surface. Not a good first race though. If you want to do this and do not have much Crit experience perhaps do a few at Murarrie prior to this Race. Otherwise a bit of fun and plenty of adrenalin and speed. One race from this series can be selected for the “WRCC Road Series” but it must be nominated prior to the series start.

3)      28th of March - Mt Cotton. It is our Race so it is personal. Enough said. Part of the “WRCC Road Series”. Perhaps we should give double points for a podium on this one?

4)      25th of April - Anzac 25. A Crit with a hill in it. Marcus can even stay on his bike on this one for the entire Race so speaks volumes for the course. A very fast finish and often windy so makes breaks difficult. Also part of the “WRCC Road Series”.

5)      29th and 30th of May. A Crit on Saturday at Murarrie and a Road Race on Sunday at Mt Alford. The Road race is testing, a tough honest circuit with plenty of sharp hills, some fast downhill sections (especially sitting on a big guys wheel) and plenty of (often windy) flat sections. Also a great build up Race if you are considering GI. Sunday also forms part of the“WRCC Road Series”

6)      13th June – Avanti Classic. I hate this race sorry as people seem to think I need to take turns. It is a handicap Race with one leg across the Wivenhoe Dam wall. Quite scenic if you have time to do anything but breathe and pedal. It is pretty well flat strap the whole way with the front markers trying to stay away from a very fast elite back bunch trying their best to mow down the field.

7)      1st of August – Charles Coin. A tough, fast circuit race. A good workout for the coming longer events. A “WRCC Road Series” event.

8)      7th of August – Cunningham Classic. Gatton to Warwick. 95 kms with a reasonable hill in it. A tough day at the office this one and tougher again if it blows. Still it is one of the major events on the calendar and a “must do at least once” type of race. A “WRCC Road Series” event.

9)      30th of October – Grafton to Inverell. One of Australia’s premier Cycling events. Looking for a WRCC record entry list this year. 228kms and a lot of hills.  One very hard and long day in the saddle. Probably as close to a European style one day event as you will get in Oz. A “WRCC Road Series” event.

Not enough times to go through all the races and the tours as well sorry i.e. Battle of the Border, Scenic Rim and Darling Downs, so have a chat to those who have done them if you want some information.

Please ensure this year you plan and enter all Races early as all Opens will close 14 days prior to the event. No more leaving it until the Monday night before the Race. If you want to participate, plan it and enter well in advance.
