Safety objectives

The Captains BlogMarch 2009 Member’s safety is one of those issues that needs to be constantly in our minds and in our actions whilst riding.

Of late we have had two incidents that resulted in significant injury for some members. It’s not that these particular incidents were the fault of any person or action, but it is a reminder that we are vulnerable to many different factors. These factors include but are not limited to:

Who you calling a Goose!!!

Lessons from Geese

1: As each bird (WRCC member) flaps its wings it creates an uplift for the bird following. By flying in a > formation (Two lines or one on Rickets Rd) the whole flock adds 71% flying range than if each bird flew alone (except the Terminator )

Lesson: People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going (Banjos) quicker and easier when they are travelling on the thrust of one another.

2: Whenever a goose falls out of formation it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to fly alone (did too much on the front and now being dropped) and quickly gets back in formation to take advantage of the lifting power, of  the bird directly in front (Gasping for breath just make it on the back by the skin of your teeth breathing through all orifices and hope no one hits it up harder)

3: When the lead goose gets tired (could take a while if it’s Palo ) it rotates back into the formation and another goose flies at the lead position (There is always someone trying to ride off the front on Saturday)

Lesson: It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing the leadership interdependent with each other (Well if I have to do a turn on the front just promise you won't drop me when I'm done)

4: The geese in formation honk from behind (make all sorts of comments and suggestions) to encourage those up front to keep up their speed (anything to keep Franz on the front)

Lesson: We need to make sure our honking from behind is encouraging not something less helpful (make sure its not too early in the morning when yelling at the goose on the front

5: When a goose gets sick or wounded (a bloody puncture) or shot down (incident with a car) two geese drop out of formation to follow him down to help and protect him (offer advice on how to fix it ,or call and ambulance and get the drivers details) They stay with him until he is either able to fly or dies (finds the puncture or uses all his tubes and has to call home to be picked up). Then they launch out on their own, with another formation to catch up with the flock (go with Case he knows all the shortcuts).

All in all we are all geese just ask any one of those car drivers that honk from behind !!.
