Members Insurance Benefits

Making a claim

All claims must be lodged within 30 days of the date of the incident.

As part of your membership of Cycling Australia you are provided with an extensive level of insurance cover. Below is a brief outline for the cover but for more comprehensive detail, please contact Australian Sport Insurance Brokers (ASIB) direct Ph: (02) 4255 2855; Fax 02 4255 2866 info@mhm-insbrokers.com.au

Public Liability Insurance

This covers registered financial members & officials, employees and voluntary workers with a $20 million legal liability indemnity to the public whilst performing duties related to activities of CA (and its affiliated states, clubs & promoters) including competition and training. NB: This excludes member-to-member cover.

Personal Accident Insurance

Members also enjoy a limited personal accident cover that provides 80% of non-Medicare medical expenses up to a maximum of $2,000 including Ambulance cover. This cover is provided in response to accidents incurred whilst in competition and endorsed training activities. (Excess $30)

In addition to the above further cover is provided as a result of injuries incurred in competition only (excludes training):

Capital Benefits up to $10,000; and:

An amount of $200 per week (after an excess period of 2 weeks) for Income Assistance, Domestic Help or as a Home Tutorial Benefit.

Professional Indemnity for Coaches

Coaches with current membership and accreditation status are provided with liability cover of $5 million whilst engaged in coaching activities under the control of CA and its affiliates.

Please contact the CA office for your claim form. Please note that the claim form has to be returned to CA for verification of membership. CA will then forward the claim to the insurer.

You should also ensure that race officials are aware of any accident or incident that occurred during a race and that a report on such incidents has been recorded or noted.

International Licences and Insurance

In accordance with international rules, Australian cyclists must have a current international licence to race overseas and in UCI events in Australia. To obtain an international licence, a cyclist must be a member of CA and must obtain adequate insurance to meet your requirements and obligations whilst traveling and competing overseas.

Members may source their own insurance's and provide a copy of the policy to CA when applying for an international licence or alternatively you may utilize the scheme currently managed by ASIB. Applications must be submitted on the CA form available on our website, at least one month before your departure date. NB: Non-competing team officials do not require cover while in competition but still require travel insurance covering medical expenses.

Registered Promoters

Individuals or entities that have been granted a CA private Promoters licence are covered under CA Public Liability subject to the provision of full risk management documentation at least two months prior to each respective event. The underwriter reserves the right to reject terms for a private promoter.

For general membership and insurance enquiries in the first instance, contact your respective State Federation or Joanne at the CA office - joanne.cameron@cycling.org.au or (02) 9644 3002.

Pack rules

  1. Relax. This is the most important thing to do. If you aren't relaxed, you may overreact in a situation and crash others in addition to yourself.
  2. Communicate. If you're unsure how to behave in a group, ask others what to do.
  3. Maintain a steady speed. Work on improving your spin and maintain a steady cadence. Know when to shift and what gear to use for different hill grades.
  4. Hold your line. Don't wander around on the road. Concentrate and be consistent.
  5. Identify obstacles and road hazards. Make sure to point these out to riders behind you.
  6. Don't ride too close to other riders. Though it's important to remain in the slipstream, try not to get too close to the rider or riders directly in front of you.
  7. Remember not to overlap wheels. This can be potentially dangerous if the rider in front of you swerves suddenly.
  8. Do your part. When it comes time for you to be at the front of the group, take your pull.
  9. Recover. You can't work at the front all the time. Take some time in the back, too. Drink some water and loosen up.
  10. Have fun. Though a group ride can be competitive at times, it isn't a race
